Members of the Tau Fire Caste range from 5’0"-5’10" in height, and 100-150lbs. in weight. They are humanoid in appearance, with 3 fingers and a thumb, blue-gray skin, and vertical slits running from their foreheads to where their noses would be. Their legs are digitigrade (“backward”) and end in cloven hooves. One of the only races developing new technology, the Tau took only 6,000 years to advance from savanah-dwelling tribes to a spacefaring empire. They are an optimistic and altruistic race, preferring to employ diplomacy and negotiations over military force, always striving toward the “Greater Good”. If pressed, they grimly enter combat with carefully-laid plans, preferring devastating ranged tactics and quick retreats. So far, the Imperium of Man has deemed them to be a low-priority threat, and humans have often fought alongside the Tau against a greater enemy. There are even reports of humans willingly serving the Tau as auxiliaries and mercenaries, though such heretical hearsay is condemned by Terran authorities.

You can read more about the Tau at the Tau page of the Warhammer 40k wiki.
